Jessica: It was actually a lot easier than you would think. I already had a map of characters/abilities to pull from. I would look up Greek gods on Wikipedia, skim through the list of deities and use my imagination to come up with a supernatural ability that could be linked to that god. Here are a few of my favorites:
Elyse – Descendant of Asclepius (God of healing) can heal with her blood.
William – Descendant of Aphrodite (God of love) can persuade through infatuation.
Sam – Descendant of Dionysus (God of wine) can turn any liquid to wine, including the blood in your veins.
I've always been fascinated with the creation of trilogies. You have the plot arc of each book, but then you also have the overarching plot of the whole series. How do you work? Did you know everything that would happen before you started writing, or was it more spontaneous?
Jessica: It was almost completely spontaneous, and I’m still kind of shocked how well it all turned out. I had no idea how the series would end until halfway through the last book!
You have a really avid fan base on sites like Goodreads. How do you connect with your readers?
Jessica: My readers are so awesome and so supportive. I’m in touch with a lot of them through personal email. It’s a lot to keep up with, but it’s fun too. I love hearing from them. This one I got before ARCs went out was one of my favorites!!
*ensue all caps*
I'VE BEEN DYING AND (IM)PATIENTLY WAITING TO KNOW WHAT HAS BEFALLEN OF MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS, ELYSE AND WILLIAM! GAH!
I AM SUPER EXCITED!
OMG IT'S THE LAST BOOK! *cue tears*
I WOULD REALLY, REALLY WANT TO GET A PHYSICAL ARC OF REDEMPTION ASAP!
*calms down . . . a bit*
(I won’t post the whole thing, but it made me smile)
Mythology and folklore are such a great thing to tap into. Did you do much research for the series?
Jessica: I was constantly researching the different gods etc. but one of my favorite pieces of mythology that found its way into my series is what inspired Elyse’s ability:
"The blood of the Gorgon, which Athena gave Asclepius, came from two very different veins. The blood from the right side could heal mankind, while the blood of the left vein could kill."
I thought, what a cool twist to add in there. So Elyse's right side heals, while her left is poison.
I tend to fall in love with my villains, sometimes more than my heroes. They're just so much fun to write. Who was your fav villain out of all the books?
Jessica: Me too!! Only, every time that happens I end up turning them into a “good-guy.” Maybe my subconscious feels sorry for them.
Kara (a fan favorite) was supposed to be a villain and ended up being a HUGE part of the book in a “good” way.
If you could live in any fictional world, what would you choose and why?
Easy. HOGWARTS!! Right?!
Count me in! So the last installment, Redemption, came out on November 2. What is next for you? Besides a big party and some time off!
Jessica: My author friends and I started our own imprint called Acorn Publishing. We’ve taken on our first two clients, so I’ll be very busy with them. Also, I’m sure I won’t be able to resist writing for long. I’m already dying to dig into my next project!
Synopsis of Redemption
Lead Council member, Christoph, is dead by Elyse’s hand, and Descendants have begun to emerge, exposing their secret to the world. Some see this as the prophecy come to fruition, but the prophecy caries a heavy consequence. It was never meant to be as peaceful as most had hoped.
Humans and Descendants struggle to live together in a world that isn’t ready for such a change. America is divided. Those who glorify the supernatural race believe Descendants truly are the gods they claim relation to. Others see them as a threat.
When Elyse gives birth to the next generation oracle, she sees one final vision—war. The destruction of the country’s major cities, and the end of America as we know it.
After her daughter is born, Elyse finds herself without the ability she needs to predict the future. Desperate to save the world from such conflict, she puts her faith in the hope that Descendants are the key to survival. After all, they have the power to supply a broken society with the means to survive.
Only from the ashes can a new world be born.
